Guitar-Making Workshop

During my GCSEs I completed two weeks of work experience with my peripatetic guitar teacher, Gil Matthews, owner of And Then Strum. This involved assisting/leading lessons, handing out flyers, redesigning information and practise sheets, musically accompanying pupils, and helping pupils to prepare for concerts. During these two weeks I had a conversation with Gil about potential future workshops he could run. I suggested doing a music-themed arts and crafts workshop. Several months later, we put this idea into action.

The Process

16-19 December 2012

My initial idea for the workshop was based upon my own experiences of making a toy guitar from scrap materials as a bored child. Since it was Gil's first time organising a crafts (as opposed to musical) workshop, I was responsible for organising, planning and providing the majority of supplies. I also created an instruction manual and example of a toy guitar for the children to observe alongside my verbal instructions and demonstration in the workshop itself.

The Result

20 December 2012

On the day of the workshop I was responsible for supervising and instructing my group of children on how to make their toy guitars, while Gil focused on the construction of toy drums. After a few musical games and lunch, the children left with their very own homemade musical instruments!
