Class 116 DMU: Pictures From The Great Central Railway, Nottingham

16th February 2018

We contacted Alan Pitt of the Great Central Railway near Nottingham and we were privileged to be given access to one of the only two remaining class 116 diesel multiple units in the UK by one of its owners, Dave Watts.  Here are the pictures from our visit; the main focus was on looking in detail at the chassis, which doesn't usually feature in pictures.

Note: left-hand side and right-hand side are from the point of view of a person looking at the front of the driver's cab.

Overview

The motor second and trailer composite coaches where outdoors.  The motor second brake coach is not shown here as it was indoors in a position where it was not possible to get an overview photograph.

Below are panoramas of the left-hand side of the motor second and trailer composite coaches, the latter focussing on the chassis only, with dimensions for all of the major chassis components. It was not possible to get a panaroma of the right-hand side as the wall was in the way; please refer to chassis detail below for those pictures.  Similarly, it was not possible to get a panaromic shot of the motor second brake coach, however we did check and all of the chassis details are identical to those for the motor second coach.

Indoors

A few somewhat fuzzy internal views inside the motor second brake coach.  The path is from entry into the brake area, through the coach to the driver's cab and back to the entry point once more:

We also measured the dimensions of the seats:

None of the seats that we saw had arm rests.

Bonus Feature

As a bonus, it turned out that the A1 Tornado, subject of my Internet Of Chuffs project, had been visiting the Nottingham Great Central Railway the previous weekend and was still hiding in their main shed.  Here are a few pictures of the enormous beast.
