New Moths Found on 18 August 2006

A warm but slightly damp night with temperatures in the mid teens centigrade.  A modest collection in the trap, dominated by Lesser Broad-bordered Yellow Underwings, a second brood of Common Wainscots (previously seen here) and Setacious Hebrew Characters, but also with quite a large number of newcomers.  Thanks to pauliev69, Stuart Read and Surreybirder for help with the IDs.

Those worth photographing were:

• a rather pretty newcomer - a Latticed Heath in its second brood,
• an Uncertain (fairly sure this is not a Vines Rustic as the spots are smaller and the lines well defined),
• a Square-spotted Clay, quite a local species,
• a quite pretty Small Square-spot, the two dark dashes on the trailing edge of the wings being particular identification marks,
• a second brood of the Flounced Rustic,
• a Brown House Moth.

Others in the trap were:

• some Oak Beauty Aggs (probably Pale), Orange Swifts (male), Mother Of Pearls, Pinion-streaked Snouts, Riband Waves, Shuttle-shaped Darts and Scoparia pyrallela,
• one each of the Copper Underwing Agg, Straw Underwing, Dagger, Flame Shoulder, Common Carpet, Straw Dot, Turnip Moth and Silver Y.
